Spaced repetition beats cramming — here's the actual research
If you've ever crammed the night before an exam, you already know how it feels: you can recall everything the next morning, and almost none of it a month later. That's not a discipline problem — it's how memory works.
The effect is well studied. A widely cited 2006 meta-analysis by Cepeda and colleagues looked across dozens of studies and found a consistent result: spacing your review sessions out over time produces meaningfully better long-term retention than massing the same amount of study time into a single cramming session, even when total study time is identical.
The intuitive version: your brain treats "I saw this again after almost forgetting it" as a much stronger signal that the material matters than "I saw this five times in a row an hour ago."
